Why is it that an adult male playing junior rugby at the bottom tier of Irish rugby or even a similar aged male playing AIL1 at the top tier of Irish club rugby has no identity crisis and fully understands they are amateur players and no matter how much they train they are not professional rugby players? Obvious isn’t it, they work day jobs, don’t have the same training and detailed monitoring that professionals do etc one is professional and the other amateur. But just keep in mind, they both train the same by and large!! P.S. the same can be said for any sport really. Now, why is it that in CrossFit and functional fitness centres around the world people look at CrossFit regional / Games athletes and competitive athletes as if they are like and like ? This is no different to the example above. Yes you may train in the same gym, yes you may even train on similar programs but you are not the same the same way the two rugby players are not the same. The competitive athletes do a whole lot more than one gym session 5 x weekly, they have detailed nutrition plans, they monitor their sleep patterns, they focus as much on recovery as they do the intensity in their training. Every waking and even sleeping moment is spent trying to be a better athlete. They are PROFESSIONAL in their approach to becoming the best possible athlete they can be and win competition’s, you are an AMATEUR trying to get fit. So the next time you are in the gym and training alongside a competitive athlete please don’t go home frustrated comparing yourself to them, don’t compare yourself to anyone but you. Focus on your job, your journey and no one else’s. This very much even relates to our gym. You will often see international weightlifters on the floor, head coaches, competitive athletes all doing the same program as you, but you can’t compare yourself to them for the reasons above. If everyone just focused on their own journey and took inspiration from others then you will be a lot happier in your progress. If you continually compare yourself to others who are in a different place to you, you will never be happy.
